Global Dibutyl Phthalate Market to Expand at 2.45% CAGR Through 2031 on Flexible PVC and Adhesive Demand

The global dibutyl phthalate (DBP) market is projected to expand from 367.92 thousand tonnes in 2025 to 425.43 thousand tonnes by 2031, at a CAGR of 2.45%, according to Research and Markets. DBP, a low-molecular-weight phthalate plasticizer, is valued for its ability to enhance the flexibility, softness and workability of polymers, and remains a widely used plasticizer for flexible PVC, nitrocellulose lacquers, adhesives, printing inks and cosmetics.

DBP offers strong solvating power and fast fusion, making it particularly effective as a primary plasticizer in flexible PVC films and sheets, and as a processing aid that accelerates gelation in PVC compounds. Its use in adhesives and sealants, coatings and printing inks reflects its broad compatibility with resins and its contribution to gloss, adhesion and film-forming behaviour. By grade, industrial grade accounted for the largest share at 78.2% in 2025, while by application plasticizers represented the highest share at 64.8%.

Asia-Pacific is the largest regional market, valued at USD 349.1 million in 2025, followed by North America at USD 122.4 million and Europe at USD 90.4 million, with demand driven by flexible PVC manufacturing, packaging and construction activity. Growth is tempered by regulatory pressure on low-molecular-weight phthalates under REACH and the U.S. CPSC, which continues to shift some demand toward higher-molecular-weight and non-phthalate alternatives; nevertheless, DBP retains a firm cost-performance position in adhesives, coatings and industrial PVC applications.
