The global stearic acid market is projected to grow from 9.98 million tonnes in 2025 and 10.51 million tonnes in 2026 to 13.59 million tonnes by 2031, at a CAGR of 5.31%, according to Mordor Intelligence. Stearic acid, a key internal lubricant and co-stabilizer for PVC processing and a feedstock for metallic soaps, is also expanding rapidly in premium personal-care products, biodegradable plastics and specialized lubricants.
By feedstock, vegetable-based sources captured 66.42% of market volume in 2025 and are forecast to expand at a 5.47% CAGR to 2031, as sustainability mandates accelerate the pivot toward Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)-certified inputs. By grade, triple-pressed material led with 45.62% share in 2025, while cosmetic- and pharma-grade volumes are the fastest-growing at an 8.05% CAGR. Plastics commanded 24.35% of demand by application, and Asia-Pacific was the dominant region with a 71.78% share, growing at a 5.69% CAGR, supported by integrated palm-oil supply chains and new capacity in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and India.
Growth is driven by clean-label personal-care trends, expanding detergent output in emerging economies and the scale-up of biodegradable plastics that use stearic-acid lubricants, while upstream volatility in palm oil and tallow prices adds cost pressure and encourages producers to diversify feedstock portfolios and adopt energy-efficient enzymatic technologies. Major players include IOI Oleochemical, KLK Oleo, Wilmar, Emery Oleochemicals and BASF.
